Zsirai Harslevelu 2017
Reviewed on November 19, 2021
According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine, there are over 6000 wine grapes grown around the globe. Can you believe that for the most part, 13 grapes cover 1/3 of the world’s vineyard! That leaves 5,987 other grapes; some of which are on the brink of extinction. Hungary prides itself on its diversity of native varietals and Haslevelu is one of them. It is often blended with another Hungarian white grape called Furmint. Hungary is Harslevelu’s original home, but it is not the only place that it is grown. It is known as Lipovina in Slovakia, Frunza de tei in Romania and Lindenblattriger in Germany.
This Hungarian white wine may be a little tricky to say, but don’t let that stop you from giving it a try! (Pronounced jeer -EYE HARSH-lev-a-loo) It is delicious. Smooth and spicy with aromas & rich flavours of stone fruit (apricots and nectarines), apple and ginger.
